The bulk of the collection is fourteen volumes of correspondence to French from individuals, societies, and institutions contracting with him for bookplates. Many of the letters are from book collectors and other engravers. Principal correspondents include Charles Dexter Allen (1865-1926), William Loring Andrews (1837-1920), Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904), William Elliott Baillie (1848-1931), Henry Blackwell (1851-1928), Beverly Chew (1850-1924), Paul Lemperly (1858-1939), Joseph Winfred Spenceley (1865-1908), Daniel Berkeley Updike (1860-1941), Edwin H. Wendell (for Dodd, Mead and Co.), and John Page Woodbury (1927-1910). There are also two scrapbook volumes containing a miscellany of newspaper clippings, programs of exhibits, articles, and obituaries of French. The correspondence in the manuscript box includes letters to French from various writers, letters from French to Dr. Charles E. Clark, 1894-1903, and letters from French to John Page Woodbury.
